Why recycle?


Mattresses are a problem for landfills.  Landfills are seeing an influx of mattresses. The compaction rate of a discarded mattress is 400% less than regular garbage. A cubic yard of compacted garbage typically weighs between 1,500 and 1,800 lbs. A cubic yard of compacted mattresses weighs about 250 lbs. and can leave voids in the ground. 


We do not want to see something that’s reusable, like steel, polyurethane foam or wood buried forever.

Focus

It is estimated that 1 billion mattresses and box springs are sold in the United States each year.  In the United States 22 million mattresses are produced annually and most of these are conventional mattresses that contain man-made materials.  They are derived from petrochemicals and from natural gas, which are nonrenewable resources.


According to an ABC new report, about 20 million mattresses get thrown away each year in the United States.


According to Ryan Trainer, International Sleep Product Association, at this time, there are only 250,000 mattresses being recycled each year.


Is the problem of mattress disposal of greater concern among one sector or the other? (e.g. should we focus solely on household generated  mattresses or expand to other sectors such as hospital, universities or other institutions)


Answer, we should focus on all sectors...When hospitals, universities, hotels, military bases, cruise ships and other institutions discard their old mattresses, it usually is done all at once which causes soft spots in the landfill and will tear up the compactors that are used on the site.  It costs over $40,000 to replace one wheel on a compactor.
